Types of computers:
Types of computers:
Different types of computers areas follows:
Analog Computers:
Analog computers represents physical quantities in the form of waves or in a continuous form. Voltage pressure, speed and temperature are some physical properties that can be measured in this way . Its output is usually displayed on a meter or graphs. Analog computers is difficult to operate and use. It has low memory and fewer functions. It provides low accuracy but faster speed than digital computers It usually built for special purpose. Analog computers is mainly used in engineering and scientific applications.
Examples:
- Speedometer is used to measure the speed of car.
- Analog clock measure time by the distance traveled by hand of clock around a dial.
- Thermometer is an analog devices that measure the length of mercury column.
Digital computers:
Digital computer processes data in numerical form using digital circuits. It perform arithmetic and logic operations with discrete values 0and 1. Everything is described as ON and OFF where 1 represent ON and 0 represent OFF.
Digital computer can store and process a large amount of data at high speed. The result of digital computers are more accurate than analog computers. Most of the computers available today are digital computers. These computers are available in different sizes, speed and capacities. Digital computers are commonly used at home and in offices etc.
Examples:
- Digital watch displays the time that does not very continuously but change from one discrete value to the other.
- Digital scoreboard directly counts discrete values such as the time left to play and the score of each team.
Hybrid Computer:
A hybrid computer is a combination of both analog and digital computer. It combines the best characteristics of both types of computers. It can accept data in analog and digital form. Hybrid computers are used in medical labs, hospitals and industrial processes etc.
Example:
Hybrid computer can monitor patient & heart function, temperature and blood pressure etc. This measurement can be displayed in digital form.
