THIRD GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER:
Third Generations of Computer:
The Third generations of computer used to integrated circuits (IC). The was invented by Jack Kilby. It was an important invention in the computer filed. The computer became smaller in size , faster , more reliable and less expensive. The examples of Third-generation computer are IBM 370, IBM System/360, UNIVAC 1180 and UNIVAC 9000 etc.
Integrated circuit
Advantages:
These computer were smaller in size and easier to operate.
They produced less heat previous generations.
They were more reliable and less expensive.
They consumed less power and provided higher processing speed.
The maintenance cost was low.
The hard drives were typically used for storage.
They supported high level programming languages.
Disadvantages:
They required air conditioning.
The highly advanced technology was to make IC Chips.
Fourth Generations computer(1971-Present):
The fourth generation computer started with the invention of microprocessor. The microprocessor contains thousands of ICs. Ted Hoff produced the first microprocessor in 1971 for Intel. It was known as Intel 4004. The IBM PC Apple computer are examples of fourth generations computers.
Advantages:
These computers are smaller in size then previous generations.
The cost of these computer is lower previous generations.
They consume less power and generate less heat.
They are more reliable and powerful.
They have high processing speed.
They are generate-purpose computers.
They are produced for commercial purpose.
They support all types of high-level languages.
Disadvantages:
The latest technology is required for manufacturing microprocessor.
Fifth generations computer (Present and future):
The Fifth generations computer is based on artificial Intelligence (AI). Some applications of this generations are voice recognition , robotics and game playing etc. The goal is to develop a computer that can understand the natural languages input and has the ability to learn.
The computer in the future might be constructed differently than today 's computer. They might be in the form of optical computer that process data using light instead of electrons. The nanotechnology can be used to develop tiny computers.
